OBI WAN KENOBI Fan Edit Review

If you’re a regular to the site, you know that I wasn’t a fan of the Disney+ series of Obi Wan, it was badly written, not very good casting, and too long.

The original story of Obi Wan Kenobi was supposed to be a movie, originally written by Stuart Beattie and was due to be in the theatres. In fact, Beattie has said the original story was supposed to be a trilogy, which is the thing at the moment.

The Last Jedi didn’t do well and split the fans, then Solo: A Star Wars Story was the first in the franchise to lose money. Imagine that, making a Star Wars movie and losing money on it. The Rise of Skywalker didn’t fare much better, only making $1, but that was half the amount of The Force Awakens.

True Star Wars fans voted with their wallets and didn’t give money to Disney at the box office. However, Disney+ was now and thing, and, without the interference of a certain Kathleen Kennedy, The Mandalorian did well and won some of the fans back.

With the failure of Solo and then TROS, Disney put all movies on hold, including an Obi Wan movie, which they developed into a TV series for the new streaming service. Disney decided, they can’t release any more movies and lose out on money at the box office, however, releasing an 8 episode series meant subscribers for two months.

Obi Wan Kenobi, the series, was just bad, overly long, had little attention to details, and even ripped apart a lot of the canon of Star Wars. Well, I wasn’t the only one to think so and another Star Wars fan re-edited the entire thing into 2 hours 30 mins movie.

Overall, this is not a perfect movie, but it is a lot better, actually watchable. Patterson has used some of the original footage, new footage from other places, and some of the original score from the PT and the OT, to make a pretty good movie.

Before I go on, I will say *SPOILERS*, so, if you haven’t seen the series, this might all be new, but I can honestly say, if you have avoided it, I would give this Obi Wan Fan Edit a go.

A lot has been changed, I did notice subtle edits, here and there, but I couldn’t say I knew the source material enough to notice all the changes. What are you getting though, is a tighter story, cutting out a lot of the filler and just making it better.

Things that are now missing are:

The Leia chase, which is now handled that Flea turns up and she is just gabbed, which is so much better.

The Jedi in the cantina trying to run, he is now just killed outright which makes the scene work so much better. Also, in this fan edit, that Jedi meets Obi Wan before that happens, which makes much more sense.

Obi Wan doesn’t now flash his lightsabre when he gets on the transport.

Leia running away from Obi Wan is cut down and handled in a much more ‘adult’ way, as in, it wasn’t childish stupid.

The entire rooftop parkour is not been trimmed down and is a lot better.

The editing on the bus is better, firstly cutting down on Leia controlling the conversation to get on the bus, but not showing Obi Wan forget Leia’s name and just nicer in the handling.

When Obi Wan shoots the controls to the laser grid, it’s tighter on the edit, so he doesn’t look like such an idiot.

The entire first face-off between Obi Wan and Vader is so much better. There’s no running away from Obi Wan, the fight has better editing, and the end of it, with the fire, is handled better, giving the impression that Vader can wait to kill Obi Wan and not just give up coz of a bit of fire.

These are just some of the things I noticed, there are more, but I’m not going to list them all. The first two acts of this movie is just so much better than the original series.

The third act is still messy, but then, this is a fan edit, Patterson couldn’t have gone back to reshoot the scenes. So, things that couldn’t be fixed are:

Tala smacking the storm troopers is still there and still looks utterly ridiculous, but it was needed for the story.

The lightsabre fight in the hallway is still silly but cut down and is better.

There’s no seeing Leia under the coat of Obi Wan, which was again, ridiculous.

The fight at the door of the hideout is still badly done, but again, the editing is tighter, making it less stupid.

Again, there are other things, but I can’t remember them all. One huge difference was the end fight between Obi Wan and Vader, which is handled better and has Duel of the Fates over the top of it, which improved the scene 100%.

When Obi Wan is trapped by the rocks, I would personally edit out him thinking about Leia, since she was the main focus of the entire show, and just have Obi Wan push his way out when he heard Qui Gon’s voice, but that’s just me.

I found myself actually invested in the end fight and it all made much more sense.

The entire ending is then changed, after the fight with Vader, Obi Wan heads to Alderran to see Leia, before heading home to look after Luke. This means that all of the Reva arc is missing, and just makes it better.

The original series was more like the Princess Leia Show and a launching pad for Reva. Leia has been toned down in this movie, to focus on the main character, you know, Obi Wan. Reva’s stupid story arc of her killing Jedi to get to Vader who killed Jedi is now a subplot, which is still there, but handled better.

It still has Vader and the Grand Inquisitor leaving Reva alive, which is again just silly, since both of them know the danger of keeping someone alive! And the Grand Inquisitor actually says:

“Revenge does wonders to the will to live, don’t you think?”

Vader has also told her he will not accept failure, but he’s happy to let her live, even though she’s completely betrayed him. Vader will snap the neck of a random villager, but he won’t kill someone that tried to literally stab him in the back.

As I said, the overall movie isn’t perfect, but it is so much better than Disney did. Imagine that, a multi-billion dollar company being outclassed by (with all due respect) some guy off the internet.

Obi Wan isn’t such a baffoon, like in the series, he isn’t there as a sidekick to Leia

You can watch Obi Wan Fan Edit by Patterson on his website, and I would hurry since it’s been taken down once before already. Again, as I said, if you have avoided Obi Wan coz of Disney, I would check this fan edit out.

It was amazing how you could lose 4 hours and 30 minutes of footage, but still, have a good story and well made.

I will give Obi Wan Kenobi Fan Edit 3.5 out of 5 stars, it’s not perfect, but I would watch it again since I will never watch the series again ever.
