Controversial: ICHI THE KILLER

Asian cinema is right up there with some of the most extreme cinema ever made. Shawn and I will be chatting about that soon, but in the meantime, we’re talking about Ichi The Killer.

The movie is directed by Takashi Miike, who has quite the catalog of extreme, disturbing, and controversial movies. His movie box set is not something you buy for your gran, unless you buy it for her, hoping she’ll just give it back to you.

Ichi The Killer is about a man with learning difficulties who has been trained to kill. After the assassination of a mob boss, a gang goes looking for the killer, only to find Ichi. One of the leaders of the gang becomes obsessed with Ichi and the violence he inflicts.

There are scenes of extreme violence towards women, lots of blood, and a scene where a man is strung up with hooks in his back, only to have boiling hot oil poured over him.

At the same time, it is a fascinating movie to watch, if you’re that way inclined and not a ‘normie’ like Yoda. The character study, of both Ichi and the mob leader, is very interesting and well done.

Here we are talking about it.
