Guillermo del Toro’s PINOCCHIO Trailer

In true Hollywood fashion, companies have to compete to get out the same story at the same time. We reported that Pinocchio is being made by Disney, starring Tom Hanks, and the worst blue fairy ever to enter our retinas.

Netflix has another version of Pinocchio coming out and it does look better. Here is the trailer.

I do love stop-motion animation, it looks so clean and beautiful. The trailer seems to show a much superior version to the Disney one, directed by Robert Zemeckis.

Del Toro has written the screenplay, based on the original novel, first published in 1883. The screenplay is a darker take on the original book and has been described as more grounded in the original material.

Pinocchio will be set between WWI and WWII in Italy, during the rise of fascism and authoritarian rule. A lonely man, Geppetto, carves a wooden boy, hoping it will be like his dead son, but the wooden boy is brought to life by a wood spirit.

However, in this version, Pinocchio is targeted by the government officials who hear about the boy made of wood and how he might have other applications. The official blurb is:

“Academy Award-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro reinvents Carlo Collodi’s classic tale of the wooden marionette who is magically brought to life in order to mend the heart of a grieving woodcarver named Geppetto. This whimsical, stop-motion film directed by Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson follows the mischievous and disobedient adventures of Pinocchio in his pursuit of a place in the world.”

The cast for this version is the voices of Gregory Mann, Ewan McGregor, David Bradley, Tilda Swinton, Christoph Waltz, Finn Wolfhard, Cate Blanchett, John Turturro, Ron Perlman, Tim Blake Nelson, and Burn Gorman.

Zemeckis Pinocchio is due out in Sept, whereas del Toro’s version is due out in Nov, for a limited cinema release, then Dec on Netflix.
