Red Sonja first hit our screens in 1985, much to the delight of fantasy nerds around the world. That was nearly 40 years ago now, so it was due for a reboot, because, it’s Hollywood.
A new Red Sonja movie has started filming and it has a new lead, Matilda Lutz, best known for Revenge (2017).
It’s being directed by M J Bassett, known for movies like Solomon Kane and Silent Hill: Revelation, which are both stinkers, but she has directed TV episodes of Ash Vs Evil Dead, Iron Fist, Altered Carbon, Reacher, and The Terminal List.
Bassett has said:
“I’ve wanted to make a Red Sonja movie since I was a teenager – she has been a powerful presence for me and a character that I have always wanted to bring to the screen with my own voice and vision. When I met Matilda Lutz, I knew she had all the magic I was looking for and could see the complexity and depth she would bring to Sonja.”
Joining Lutz in the cast are Martin Ford, Robert Sheehan, Wallis Day, Michael Bisping, Katrina Duren, Manal El-Feitury, and Eliza Matengu.
Red Sonja is a character from Dynamite Entertainment, originally created by Robert E Howard and adapted by Roy Thomas. This reboot has been in production for about 15 years, with character posters first shown at Comic-Con 2008 with Rose McGowan as the lead.
Someone once said that making a movie in Hollywood is like trying to cook a steak by having 20 people breathe hot air on it.
Since then it has gone through several directors and screenwriters to get to this point, where filming has now started. There is no set release date yet.
