Tom Hardy is a good actor, he’s given some great performances in some great movies, from his early movies like Black Hawk Down and Star Trek: Nemesis to more modern movies like Bane in The Dark Knight Rises and Max in Mad Max: Fury Road.
He is generally known for playing a tough guy, but it turns out that he actually is a tough guy. The 45-year-old entered a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Championship being held in Milton Keynes, England and won a gold medal.
Using a lesser-known pseudonym of Edward Hardy he snuck into the championship, hosted by the Ultimate Martial Arts Championship. He won all of his matches, defeating several opponents, and took home the gold.
One of the spokespersons from the tournament described Hardy as a “really nice guy”. I guess you would call him that, otherwise he might get you in a headlock and choke you until you pass out.
It turns out that this isn’t the only time. Last month he also competed in, and won, the REORG Jiu-Jitsu Championship, which was helping to raise money for a charity that supports funds for veterans and emergency workers.
In this competition, another spokesperson said:
“Everyone recognized him, but he was very humble and was happy to take time out for people to take photographs with him. It was a real pleasure to have him compete at our event.”
One of his opponents, Danny Appleby, who fought and lost against Hardy said:
“I was shell-shocked. [Hardy] said, ‘Just forget it’s me and do what you would normally do.’
I’ve done about six tournaments and I’ve been on the podium in every one. But he’s probably the toughest competitor I’ve had — he certainly lived up to his Bane character. That’s for sure.”
If you saw Hardy on the street and would like a selfie with him, just make sure you don’t sneak up on him.
